Le chalef pousse surtout type de sol et supporte bien la salinité. Il est aussi un des arbres pioniers, comme la mousse verte des zones d’ombre, qui préparent le sol pour le développement des autres espèces plus exigeantes en terme de nutriments. En effet, le chalef vit en symbiose avec les bacteries fixatrices d’azote atmosphèrique. Comme les légumineux, le Podocarpus, un des seuls conifères fixateurs d’azote, les bacteries du genre Nitrobacter transforment l’azote dans l’atmosphère (1/4 oxygène et 3/4 azote) en fertilisant assimilable par les plants. Cette relation symbiotique est observable au niveau du système racinaire des Eleagnus sous forme de nodules, qui arbritent les Nitrobacter du cycle de l’azote du sol ou du milieu aquatique.

Les fruits frais de l’Elegnus macrophylla ont été ramssés hier au bord de l’océan Atlantique. Comme les arbousiers, la floraison est accompagnée par la maturité des fruits. De ce fait, les fruits des Eleagnus sont très décoratifs en petit bonsai ou mame bonsai.

Most of my bonsai trees are from seeedlings. At this time of the year, from October to January, I pick up fresh almost everywhere. The selected seeds for bonsai need to be kept in the fridge temperature from 1 to 6 months before its germination at in spring.
